Whereabout lets you know when friends are nearby, without tracking exactly where they are.
Why Whereabout
Most apps show your exact location all the time. Whereabout only shows enough to know someone's around.
Think spontaneous meetups, not surveillance.
It runs quietly in the background and only surfaces something when it's actually worth knowing.
How it works
You can see where a friend is, just not their exact spot.
You get notified when a friend's nearby, with simple controls to keep the noise down.
Location updates run in the background so the app doesn't need to stay open.
Current stage
Whereabout is in active development, in closed testing on TestFlight.
Location, notifications, privacy controls, and background updates are all being actively worked on.
Backend runs on AWS (Node/Express, PostGIS on PostgreSQL).
